Broadcast School

Broadcast School

The whole world is dealing with the coronavirus, and Central Africa is also getting ready.

For now there are only 12 cases, all in Bangui, the capital city. In the neighboring city of Cameroon there are already 996 sick people from Covid-19 and Cameroon is closer than Bangui!

The decisions taken to slow the spread of the virus (closing schools, keeping distant from one another, hand washing, the rather theoretical closure of bars, travel restrictions and number of passengers able to travel) has been extended for another 15 days.

Thousands of children have had to stay home with not much to do (apart from going out to hunt for food). We considered broadcasting lessons for the children by radio. In Bozoum we have the new "Radio la Voix de Koyale", and together (both the public school and the Catholic school) we have committed to doing 3 hours of lessons every day over the radio. How they have organized it is there is a teacher with 2 or 3 students in a class and a tape recorder and the lesson is recorded by the technicians, then broadcast.

Half an hour of lessons for each of the 6 elementary school classes: it may not be much, but enough to capture the attention of the children, and allow them to continue their learning. It also allows the adults to take care of the future, and to build it, slowly.
