Light and colors, color and lights

Light and colors, color and lights

Almost a month ago we prepared the stained glass windows for the chapel of the new convent in Bangui, and today we were able to install them…

They are really beautiful. A little light can make colors shine. It's a bit like life!

But let's go in order!

All last week the friends of the NGO Siriri, OPS of Prague (Czech Republic), completed the training of elementary teachers in Bossemptele. There were more than 90 of them, and everything went very well. There was an interesting element: all the trainers were Central African teachers who worked with passion, enthusiasm and competence.

On Sunday I went to Samba Bougoulou to celebrate Mass.

On Tuesday I left for Bangui with the carpenters. We installed 20 door frames and 6 window frames. Above all, the work of the windows was completed.

Tomorrow morning, at 5, we will be leaving for Baoro.

Mid-August in Baoro

Mid-August in Baoro

Mid-August in Baoro

Mid-August… alternate!

These past few days I have taken advantage of the August 15 celebration to go to the most distant villages: Bayanga Didi, Yoro and Sinaforo.

When I get to there, I sleep in Yoro or Bayanga Didi, where there is a room behind the church. A little sparse, but at least there is a roof, which is particularly useful in this rainy season!

I also had a little bit of adventure, and met lots of people! Thank God I didn't encounter the rebels, or any big animals (a few days ago a buffalo killed a woman in the fields!). I only had one issue, a hole in my tire on the way back, and the encounter with a magnificent flower, a Protea, an almost unique specimen in the sea of vegetation that accompanies this rainy season.

The streets are getting worse and worse: the water turns them into streams, with large puddles. It took almost 3 hours to get to Bayanga Didi, which is only 80km away.

I left on Saturday: which was a smart start. There were only a couple of cars on the road with me, and that's all the traffic!

I arrived in Bayanga Didi in the evening, and I set up the screening of the film. This time it was "The Ten Commandments", from 1956! We had almost the whole village attend!

On Sunday we celebrated Mass, and the church was full. Today they also bring the firstfruits of the crops, and I blessed these fruits of labour.

In the afternoon I moved to Yoro. Here too I screened the film. The night passed quietly, with a little rain. But at 7 it stopped raining, and I set off on foot for Sinaforo, a small village 7-8 km from Yoro. The road has now become a path, in the middle of the tall grass. I arrived in Sinaforo after about an hour's walk, and I meet the catechist and the village, and after the confessions I celebrated Mass in the chapel, made of earthen bricks, and with the roof of old metal sheets.

The sky is dark, but it's not raining, and after Mass I left for Yoro, where in the evening we watched the second part of the film.

Tuesday morning was the feast of the Assumption. I made a few confessions, and then I celebrated Mass, but there weren't as many people. Many people took advantage of the fact that it didn't rain to go to the fields for the first crops.

I returned to Baoro in the early afternoon, and on Wednesday I left for Bossemptele, 92km away, where the second teacher training, organized by Siriri, is taking place. There are more than 90 teachers here, most of whom come from Bozoum.

Happy mid-August!

Arrivals and more arrivals…

Arrivals and more arrivals…

Even here in Central Africa, summer is a time of arrivals and departures.

On Friday morning, Fr. Davide Sollami, our Procurator of the Missions, arrived with 5 volunteers: Guido, Maria, Gianluca, Lucia and James.

Fr. Mesmin, the new superior of the Mission, also arrived with him. After two years of studying in Rome, he is back with this new responsibility, which will see him busy with the 5 Carmelite Missions in Central Africa.

As soon as they got here we had a brief stop at Carmel, and then off to Baoro, where we arrived around 5pm.

Here the volunteers will get to work to get to know the Mission and the country a little, but also to lend a hand with the various projects.  On Monday they will start painting the parish hall.

On Monday Fr. Arland finally arrived, the new parish priest of Baoro. The bishop will come on Sunday, August 6th to begin the new ministry. Br Jephte, a young Carmelite student, also arrived with him, he will stay with us in Baoro for the whole year, on a pastoral internship.

I'm staying here in the parish on Sunday, because it's the day of the vote in the referendum to change the Constitution. It is a critical moment, because this referendum is strongly desired by the president and the government to secure power for many years…

There is a lot of fear, but everything ran smoothly. The percentage of voters, at least here in the city (but also in Bangui, Bouar and elsewhere) was very low. Probably less than 20%.

The various school expansion works are also continuing (here in Baoro, but also in Kouisso Baguera and Bawi): we hope to complete them before the start of the school year.

News in Baoro

The travels and news continue.

Last Thursday, August 3, I went down again to Bangui with Fr. Davide, to see the construction site of the new convent.

On Friday the 4th Jana Škubalová arrived (the director of Siriri.OPS, the Prague NGO that has been helping us for years) together with Thameur Debouba: they came to Central Africa for 2 professional development courses for the elementary school teachers. The sessions will take place in Baoro (from Monday, August 7th) and in Bossemptele, the following week. Between the two sessions, more than 150 teachers will be trained in the "apprendre en jouant" ("learning by playing") method, which will allow a new approach to teaching.

We left Bangui early on Saturday morning, and before 12 we were in Baoro.

Sunday, August 6th was the feast of the Transfiguration.  It is a great celebration for the parish of Baoro,  it was Fr. Arland Djim Togan first service as the new parish priest.

The bishop came to preside over the Mass, during which the new pastor renewed his commitment to serve the Church in Baoro. He accompanied it with some simple gestures that highlighted the work that the parish priest has to face:

- He had him sit in the celebrant's chair (because he will preside over the liturgical celebrations and lead the prayer)

- He entrusted him with the keys of the Tabernacle, to signify the strong bond with the Eucharist

- Accompanied him to the confessional, a sign of his commitment to the sacrament of Reconciliation

 - He had him ring the bell: it is the voice that calls to common prayer

- He had him open the church, because the parish priest is the guardian of the parish

It was a very beautiful celebration, with singing and dancing, and many priests and confreres who came for this occasion. There were also the catechists, counselors and many of the Christians committed to supporting the parish priest in his service.

We finished the Mass after "only" 3 hours, and concluded the party with a big lunch: we were more than 100 people gathered for this moment of joy and sharing.

Good job, Fr Arland!
