Arrivals and more arrivals…
Even here in Central Africa, summer is a time of arrivals and departures.
On
Friday morning, Fr. Davide Sollami, our Procurator of the Missions,
arrived with 5 volunteers: Guido, Maria, Gianluca, Lucia and James.
Fr.
Mesmin, the new superior of the Mission, also arrived with him. After
two years of studying in Rome, he is back with this new responsibility,
which will see him busy with the 5 Carmelite Missions in Central Africa.
As soon as they got here we had a brief stop at Carmel, and then off to Baoro, where we arrived around 5pm.
Here
the volunteers will get to work to get to know the Mission and the
country a little, but also to lend a hand with the various projects. On
Monday they will start painting the parish hall.
On Monday Fr.
Arland finally arrived, the new parish priest of Baoro. The bishop will
come on Sunday, August 6th to begin the new ministry. Br Jephte, a young
Carmelite student, also arrived with him, he will stay with us in Baoro
for the whole year, on a pastoral internship.
I'm staying here
in the parish on Sunday, because it's the day of the vote in the
referendum to change the Constitution. It is a critical moment, because
this referendum is strongly desired by the president and the government
to secure power for many years…
There is a lot of fear, but
everything ran smoothly. The percentage of voters, at least here in the
city (but also in Bangui, Bouar and elsewhere) was very low. Probably
less than 20%.
The various school expansion works are also
continuing (here in Baoro, but also in Kouisso Baguera and Bawi): we
hope to complete them before the start of the school year.
