Bouar Tradeshow

Bouar Tradeshow
I have just returned from Bouar, where I accompanied a couple of sick people to visit the ophthalmologist. It was 120 km away and we were lucky to have it so "close".
The ophthalmology study is located inside the Center St. Michel, a center created to treat and follow AIDS patients. A couple of years ago, with the help of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, we managed to build and equip it with operational machines.  This makes it quite valuable for many people, who in one visit can be treated, given medicines and glasses.
I also went to Bouar for another reason: the Agricultural Fair opened today. It is the tenth edition: we started it after a few years after the one of Bozoum, and it is now growing quite independently, with the support of an Italian Association (Jiango Be Africa), of the Femmes chrétiennes et catholiques de Bouar Association (Christian women and Catholics of Bouar) and FAO and WFP.
Here too, there was a big party (with a good female presence), many cooperatives from the villages of the Bouar region, and many products.
My dream? A fair every year in all 16 prefecture capitals of Central Africa!

16th Agricultural Fair of Bozoum. Part Two

16th Agricultural Fair of Bozoum. Part Two
Opening on Friday morning, January 24, 2020, the 16th Bozoum Agricultural Fair continued for another 2 days, until Sunday the 26th.
Saturday morning, the second day, I went down to the Fair early, and I realized that there were fewer bags than the previous day, which was a good sign: it meant that sales were going well.
At 8.30 we left with the Ministers and the various delegates to the rice fields of Bozoum: this year, as well,  the results were excellent, with an average of 5 tons of rice produced per hectare. The unfortunate fact is that 17 hectares of rice were destroyed by the August floods (caused in part by heavy rainfall, and in part by the excavation works in the Ouham river bed by the Chinese companies).
On returning to Bozoum we passed by the Radio station "La Voix de Koyale", who gave the ministers a nice interview.
In the afternoon we left to visit the now famous "Bozoum gardens", which are masterpieces of precision, beauty, colours and lots of work!
On Sunday morning, after Mass was celebrated by the National Secretary of Caritas, Abbé Alain, we prepared everything needed for the awards. At each Fair there are 2 competitions: one reserved for stands and exhibitors, and another for vegetable gardens. There is great pride taken for this double recognition, which rewards people and cooperatives who have distinguished themselves in the work and in the display of products.
Finally, the various dignitaries handed out the certificates, a medal and some gifts to the first 10 exhibitors and gardeners. Our students of the last class of St Augustin High School also received recognition, they worked exceptionally hard on the reception and compilation of data on products and sales.
In the afternoon the party continued, but then there was nothing left to buy! Of the more than 3,600 bags that arrived, nothing remained.
On Monday morning, while we were counting sales, we were shocked by the success of this fair: twice as much as last year! Sales exceed 90 million f cfa (over 150,000 euros) !.
See you at the next fair!

16th Annual Agricultural Fair of Bozoum. Act One

16th Annual Agricultural Fair of Bozoum. Act One

It was a good month of preparation on our part, which involved many months of work in the fields, and finally the Big Agricultural Fair of Bozoum 2020 arrived.

For 16 years, just like Caritas, we have been organizing this unique event across Central Africa, involving hundreds of agricultural cooperatives in the region.

Two visits to various cities and villages to understand the progress of the agricultural season and take stock of the production. Various trucks that leave from different cities (Ngaoundaye, 220 km; Ndim, 180 km; Bocaranga, 125; Taley, 45, and other centres). Three Ministers (Agriculture, Humanitarian Action and Women's Rights), the staff of the Ministry of Commerce, 6 deputies, the bishop of Bouar, and some NGOs.  The parade of cooperatives, to represent the pride of those who work the land. We had 120 cooperatives present, and the whole city of Bozoum celebrating for 3 days.

From January 24-26 2020, we had three days of work and celebration, to highlight the work of thousands of women and men who work hard to keep the land producing the gift of agricultural products, present in hundreds of bags here at the Fair: cassava, peanuts, rice, sesame, corn, millet, salad, carrots, cabbage, and dozens of seeds with the strangest colors and shapes.

A generous land, abundant rains, and many people of good will: a country, Central Africa, which can, if it wishes, live peacefully, and reap all the good things of God.
